Innovation and University Engagement
Savannah River National Laboratory

Bio

Liz Hoffman serves as director of the Savannah River National Laboratory’s (SRNL) Office of Innovation and University Engagement. She is responsible for the management and integration of programs designed to further scientific innovation within the laboratory, which includes the Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program, Postdoctoral Researcher Program, University Engagement Program, and the Research Library. These programs advance the state of science through collaboration and partnership.

With a background in carbide and carbon materials, Hoffman joined SRNL as a researcher working on degradation of materials in extreme environments. Her research spanned a range of material systems and processes, with projects including investigations into metallic whisker growth, nuclear waste corrosion control programs, accelerated aging of elastomeric seals, and alternative materials for accident tolerant nuclear fuel applications. Hoffman is a Fellow of ASM International, a global technical society for materials engineers.

Most recently, Hoffman has served as Vice President and a Member of the Board of Trustees for ASM International. Through her leadership, the society has developed and issued a statement on principles for a stronger community and provided training to society leadership on the topics of allyship and inclusion.

Hoffman has a Doctor of Philosophy in materials science and engineering from Drexel University.
