Savannah River National Laboratory and the University of Arizona announced the joint appointment of M. Bonner Denton, a recognized expert in analytical chemical instrumentation, who will collaborate on research initiatives between the two institutions.

“Dr. Denton is a pillar of the analytical science community, and it has been a personal privilege to learn from and work with Bonner on exciting new technologies in support of national security mission needs,” said SRNL scientist Joe Mannion. “This appointment will foster new collaborative opportunities with the University of Arizona and strengthened SRNL’s capabilities to address emerging technical and mission challenges of the Department of Energy. Dr. Denton’s extensive expertise in the development of advanced instrumentation will be an invaluable asset for SRNL as we strive to build world class capabilities and expertise at the lab.”

Denton, whose research interests fall primarily into the areas of analytical spectroscopy and mass spectrometry, has employed the latest technological advances in electronics, physics, optics, acoustics, mechanical engineering and computer science to develop new and improved spectrochemical techniques with his research group over the years. Denton and his coworkers were pioneers in applying focal plane array detectors to analytical spectroscopy, providing increased speed, sensitivity, dynamic range, and improved background correction.

“I look forward to working with the many innovative scientists and engineers at Savannah River National Laboratories developing advanced solutions to national problems,” said Denton.

Denton received his Ph.D. in Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Champaign Urbana, and is a Galileo Circle fellow, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy, a Fellow of the American Chemical Society and served as a member of the National Commission on Forensic Science.

SRNL’s Joint Appointment Program is designed to enhance collaboration between SRNL and U.S. academic institutions, foster innovation, and help build the technical workforce of the future. Joint appointees serve as a vital bridge connecting laboratory researchers, students, and academic faculty to accelerate scientific discovery and support the Department of Energy’s national mission.
