SRNL and the University of South Carolina Establish Joint Appointment
Savannah River National Laboratory and the University of South Carolina announced the joint appointment of Dr. William Ramsey, a technical program manager for SRNL, who will collaborate on research initiatives between the two institutions.

We’re equipping our students and faculty to lead at a significant scale and across a broad scope, while applying business expertise to some of the nation’s most complex issues. This partnership represents the kind of forward-thinking, interdisciplinary engagement that will define the future of business education and economic leadership in South Carolina and beyond.”
Dr. Ramsey specializes in nuclear materials processing and commercial product development. He has developed numerous foamed glass and ceramic products for use in abrasive, hydroponic agriculture and filtration applications. Within the nuclear materials complex he has managed strategic planning and waste feed delivery planning at Hanford Site’s Washington River Protection Solutions and led development of upgrades for the Savannah River Site’s liquid waste system flowsheet.
“This appointment is intended to strengthen ongoing efforts joint between SRNL and the University of South Carolina,” said Ramsey. “We commonly partner on techno-economic analyses for commercial and Department of Energy programs. We will be performing joint work on various cost estimating, cost/benefit analyses and analysis of alternatives projects. We will also look to further incorporate with the science and engineering disciplines to provide the most comprehensive solutions for strategic issues.”
Ramsey is a member of the Savannah River Mission Completion Technical Advisory Board and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla and received both his master’s degree and doctoral degree from Clemson University.
“The collaboration provides a unique opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students
at the Darla Moore School of Business to engage in experiential learning,” said Paul Bliese, chair of the Management Department at the Moore School. “By partnering to work on the Department of Energy’s Office of Environmental Management projects, students can learn how concepts presented in traditional classroom settings are applied in practice. At the same time, the partnership provides DOE-EM personnel with access to both students and Moore School faculty. With respect to the latter, Moore School faculty work with a range of public and private firms and have diverse skills and expertise that can be leveraged to identify best-practices and novel solutions for DOE-EM.”
SRNL’s Joint Appointment Program is designed to enhance collaboration between SRNL and U.S. academic institutions, foster innovation and help build the technical workforce of the future. Joint appointees serve as a vital bridge connecting laboratory researchers, students and academic faculty to accelerate scientific discovery and support the Department of Energy’s national mission.
