SRNL hosts EM Assistant Secretary Walsh, showcases lab’s national impact

May 11, 2026

Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management (EM) Tim Walsh visited Savannah River National Laboratory and saw first-hand how the laboratory is leveraging its vast expertise and decades of experience to develop new, impactful advancements in national security, environmental stewardship, and energy abundance and affordability.

SRNL Director Johney Green led Walsh through several tour stops across SRNL including the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative (AMC). Green and lead researchers discussed innovations in advanced manufacturing, nuclear materials research, and environmental restoration technologies. They also discussed digital engineering and explained how tapping the power of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates scientific discovery and unique solutions supporting EM missions that benefit the nation.

At the AMC, Walsh met teams developing next generation modeling and simulation capabilities to support evolving national energy and technology needs. At SRNL’s applied research and main campuses, researchers provided updates on programs spanning tritium science, nuclear materials processing, robotics and remote systems, and research supporting future plutonium pit production.

Additionally, Walsh and SRNL experts discussed mission priorities, workforce development, and opportunities to expand collaboration across the EM complex. Throughout the visit, SRNL researchers highlighted the vital role a national laboratory plays as a hub of innovation and excellence in science, energy, and environmental solutions for the Department of Energy and the United States.

Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management (EM) Tim Walsh meets with Savannah River National Laboratory researchers for a demonstration on how excess nuclear materials are safely transformed into grout or glass forms for processing, transportation, and long-term storage.

“Assistant Secretary Walsh’s visit reinforced the importance of the work underway at SRNL to support the department’s most complex challenges,” said Dr. Green. “From nuclear materials and tritium science to environmental cleanup robotics and AI, we were honored to show Mr. Walsh How we are accelerating the path from research to application – enabled by the Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative and its role in the region and the nation as a hub for innovation and advanced manufacturing.”
