SRNL Awarded R&D 100 Award for Advanced Engineered Cellular Magmatics

August 27, 2025

AIKEN, S.C. — Savannah River National Laboratory has been announced as the winner of a prestigious 2025 R&D 100 Award for an innovative technology aimed to convert landfill-bound materials into high-value products.

The technology, known as advanced engineered cellular magmatics, was developed by SRNL researcher Cory Trivelpiece and his team in partnership with Silica-X, Inc.

Established in 1963, the R&D 100 Awards are sponsored by R&D World Magazine and recognize the world’s 100 most innovative technologies each year. They are often referred to as the “Nobel Prize of Engineering” and “The Oscars of Innovation.”

“I’m incredibly proud of our SRNL team for earning this R&D 100 Award in partnership with Silica-X,” said SRNL Director Dr. Johney Green. “This recognition highlights the power of innovation, collaboration and turning bold ideas into real-world impacts.”

The award recognition in the mechanical/materials category highlights the innovative advanced engineered cellular magmatics project, which involves reusing materials, such as recycled glass or other feedstocks, in creative ways to develop products with applications in construction, waste remediation and more.

“It’s an honor for me and this team to get recognition from the awards committee – to be selected for the award along with other national labs and some of the largest R&D companies in the world is truly humbling and amazing,” said Trivelpiece.

SRNL will receive the award at a November 20 ceremony in Scottsdale, Arizona.
